Offline earnings in idle games are usually a simple calculation, not a simulation. When you close the game, it saves a timestamp. When you come back, it measures how long you were gone, multiplies that by your production rate, and caps the total at a fixed number of hours. Frog Pond, for example, pays up to 8 hours of full-speed production, and you can raise that cap with certain frogs and talents.
Knowing how the calculation works makes it easy to earn more while you’re away.
How do idle games calculate offline earnings? #
Most follow the same steps:
- The game saves your progress and the current time when you leave.
- When you return, it compares the saved time with the current time.
- It multiplies the time away by your production per second.
- It applies a cap and any bonuses, then shows you the total.
Nothing actually runs while the app is closed, which is why idle games don’t drain your battery in the background. The “work” your frogs, chickens or businesses did is worked out in a fraction of a second when you reopen.
AdVenture Capitalist was one of the first games to earn while closed. Wikipedia’s incremental game article credits it with an early offline earning system that “tracks a player’s progress while the game is not running”. It’s now standard across the genre.
Why do idle games cap offline earnings? #
A cap does two jobs for the designer. It keeps the game’s balance in check, since a player gone for a week would otherwise come back with more than the next several hours of play could earn. It also gives you a reason to check in: once the cap is full, your pond or factory is wasting time.
Caps vary a lot by game and are often upgradable. In Egg, Inc., grain silos are what let your farm run by itself for longer periods. In Frog Pond, the base cap is 8 hours, and three things raise or boost it:
| Boost | Effect |
|---|---|
| Old Toad | +6 minutes of cap per Toad, up to +6 hours |
| Pond Vitality talent | +10% cap per rank, 5 ranks |
| Generous Pond talent | +5% offline payout per rank, 5 ranks |
With 60 Old Toads and Pond Vitality maxed, the cap reaches 21 hours: 8 plus 6 from Toads, then 50% more from the talent.
Do you earn at full speed while offline? #
It depends on the game. Some pay a reduced rate while you’re away to make active play more rewarding. Frog Pond pays full speed: the offline total is your production rate times the time you were gone, up to the cap.
Things that only happen while the game is open don’t count. You won’t earn from tapping, and in Frog Pond, pond happenings like fly swarms and dragonfly chests only appear while you’re playing. So offline time is steady income, and active time is where the bonuses are.
Why do games offer to double offline earnings with an ad? #
Because it’s a good trade for both sides. The game shows an ad and earns money; you get twice the haul for 30 seconds of video. Rewarded ads like this are optional in most games. In Frog Pond, the “×2 watch ad” button on the welcome-back screen is the main place ads touch your progress, and you can always take the normal amount instead.
The math on whether to watch is easy: the bigger the haul, the more a double is worth. Doubling eight hours of late-game production can be worth more than an hour of active play. Doubling a 5-minute absence usually isn’t worth the time.
How do you earn more while you’re away? #
- Spend everything before you leave. Offline earnings use your production rate, so every frog or upgrade you buy before closing the game pays off for the whole absence.
- Don’t prestige right before a long break. A fresh run produces very little. Reset when you’re about to play, and let a strong run carry you overnight. Our guide on when to prestige covers this in more detail.
- Check in around the cap. If the cap is 8 hours, a morning and evening session means you’re almost never capped out. Sleeping 9 hours with an 8-hour cap wastes an hour a night, which is where cap upgrades earn their keep.
- Raise the cap if you’re regularly over it. In Frog Pond, Old Toads and the Pond Vitality talent do this. Our guide to spending Tadpole Eggs covers when that talent is worth it.
- Double the big hauls. Use the ad doubler after long absences, not short ones.
- Come back during bonuses. Some games apply temporary multipliers to offline totals. Frog Pond’s weekend Pond Festival doubles production, and offline earnings are worked out from your production when you reopen the game, so coming back on a Saturday or Sunday doubles the haul.
Can you get offline earnings by changing your phone’s clock? #
In some games, moving your phone’s clock forward tricks the offline calculation, which is why it’s the oldest idle-game cheat. It tends to backfire. Daily rewards, streaks and scheduled events all follow the same clock, and setting it back can break streaks or lock you out of rewards for a while. Many online games also check the time against a server. It’s not worth risking a long save for.
Do offline earnings need an internet connection? #
Not in games that save locally. Frog Pond keeps your save on your device with no account or server, so offline earnings work on a plane or in airplane mode. Only the optional ads need a connection. Games that store saves on a server usually do need to connect before paying out.

Frog Pond is a good example of a generous offline system: 8 hours at full speed by default, frogs and talents that extend it, and a welcome-back screen that shows exactly what your pond earned while you were gone.
Frequently asked questions #
Do idle games keep running when the app is closed? #
Not literally. The game saves the time you left and calculates your earnings when you return. The result is the same as if it had been running, up to the offline cap.
Why did I earn less than I expected offline? #
You probably hit the cap. In Frog Pond, anything past 8 hours (plus Old Toad and talent extensions) isn’t counted. Some games also pay a reduced offline rate, though Frog Pond doesn’t.
Is it better to leave an idle game open? #
Only if you’ll interact with it. Leaving it open lets events and bonuses appear, but if you’re not tapping, offline earnings pay the same base rate without draining your battery.
What is the offline cap in Frog Pond? #
8 hours by default. Each Old Toad adds 6 minutes (up to 6 extra hours), and the Pond Vitality talent adds 10% per rank.
